Poem in Response to The Sunday Whirl

17 Jun

Hi! Another Sunday, another whirl at a wordle. Mine is pure whimsy. I tried to cover as many of you that I know roughly where you live in North America. This is my brain traveling.

The Weather Channel

Pull the latch-string
over San Francisco and the Bay Area:
watch the marine layer roll in
over the US Open.

Does anyone ever know what is happening in Nebraska?

Trace the current,
find the draft coming down from Canada
into Montana.

Nevada is just plain hot.

Zip down to Mexico,
open the chest,
find blue sky and sunshine.

San Antonio, Texas, is overcast with periodic sunshine.

Blend cumulus and nimbus –
look for squalls over the Midwest;
keep a spare bit of wind
to blow through the Great Lake States.

Pennsylvania could use some peace and quiet.

Listen to the crack of thunder,
the strike of tympani over Tennessee and Georgia,
the racket of the refrain
touching North Carolina.

Keep your temper, New York. It’s summer in the city.

If you haven’t visited Brenda at The Sunday Whirl, yet, head on over and see what others have done with the wordle words: blend, spare, latch, string, trace, current, draft, chest, crack, strike, temper, racket, refrain.

Happy writing, all.

A delightful playful lingering weather report, and ended so well with New York. Forgot it’s a wordle. I’m also back to perpetual sunshine.

Whimsy is good! Enjoyed this. I found myself in both the “Great Lake States” and “the Midwest.” I will be expecting to see you soon on the Weather Channel!

Morning, Mary. You should have seen me trying to make sure I had people covered! My US geography is shaky. The poem was fun.

Very clever and descriptive use of the wordle words.

lots of fun. sounds like something my dad would do. He is a pilot and obsessed with the weather.

Mark, I understand the obsession. I find all things weather, fascinating.

This was just delightful! A nice read to wake up to…while it isn’t hot now…it could be another scorcher. I’ll just have to check the weather now! Peace and quiet indeed 🙂

I’ve been able to make some connections and continue with my story verse…enjoy:

Love these beautiful bits, Margo: “watch the marine layer roll in” and “open the chest,/find blue sky and sunshine.”

I LOVE what you’ve wordled my friend. The topic you picked suits these words perfectly!! Big smiles!

This was a fun romp around wordler country, Margo.
Does anyone ever know what is happening in Nebraska?
made me laugh. Humor is a good thing. Thanks for the weather report.

Brenda, I spent a lot of time grinning as I placed people around North America, then tried to get them into the weather report. Yours [Montana] was the first that started the rest.

Margo, great read and lots of fun in the process. Great way to tackle the wordle. We had very hot and humid yesterday. Time to stay inside and only venture out in the evenings,

Thank you, Elizabeth. The only thing saving us here is a constant cloud cover. I’m not holding my breath.

This is absolutely delightful, Margo. LOVE “open the chest, find blue sky and sunshine.” And yes, “Nevada is just plain hot.” At least my part of Nevada. Heading up north to Lake Tahoe (Nevada side) in July, and it’s heaven on earth. 😉

Thought of you and Paula making mischief together all day yesterday. 😉 Someday we shall all wield cocktails and pens and sassy attitudes together, in the same state. And look out, world. 😉

Looking forward to that someday 🙂

Cheryl, that might be one of my favourite things about this group wordling together, is that sometimes we all write the same poem and sometimes we are polar!

A fun, clever write, Margo! I especially loved that last line: “Keep your temper, New York. It’s summer in the city.” Reminds me of the Lovin’ Spoonfuls song – Summer in the City. (Hot town, summer in the city. Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty. Been down, isn’t it a pity. Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city).

Marianne, love that song. I’m so glad you gave the words, so I could bop my way through your comment.

Margo, this was great fun to read! I didn’t even realize it was a wordle — I had to look for the words. You took such a unique approach to these words — love the weather theme and how personified the States.

This is both lovely and clever, Margo! Love the “travelogue” as the unifying metaphor. So nice!

      18/06/2012 at 8:29 am

Gerry, I love anyone who mentions unifying metaphors! I do miss talking about the how with people.

        18/06/2012 at 9:17 am

We can talk the how any time you like! I don’t call myself a poet–I’m more into fiction now–but I taught poetry writing for years, and the how fascinates me.

          18/06/2012 at 9:26 am

It’s all about the how [in fiction as well]. I taught both the analysis of and the writing, poetry and prose, so I come at the how from two directions. We used to have wonderful discussions in the common room.

I did, too (what I called “close reading” as well as writing), at the secondary level. I bet you did have great discussions!

Secondary level, check! We also called it ‘close reading’. Well, how lovely to know you are there.

You can hear how much fun you had with this one. I think I feel the need to hop in my car and drive around the country. On second thought I will just turn on the weather channel.

I love this poem, but then I love weather. We’re rather preoccupied with it in this house, and have a fancy-all-dancing weather station that electronically records everything except my voice mail message.

Nice, Misky! Anything weather fascinates me. The topic is the closest I get to a theme with my poems.
